Dog Days

Our Life

Happy Thursday!

Thursdays are always a little crazy around here.  Thursday evening I have agility class with Bentley at IncrediPaws in Reynoldsburg, Ohio.  Usually during the day I try to run Bentley as much as possible so he is worn out by the time we get to class and he isn’t the crazy dog.  It never really works out that way though.  We were doing the curved tunnel tonight and when he went through it – he would go running out the other end and run off into the other class… He was like ” I’m Free! I’m Free! “.  I started laughing at the whole thing because he just has this hilarious look on his face while this is all going on. I probably shouldn’t laugh… I need to work on that… maybe I will get a cookie if I don’t laugh 🙂

I made some homemade dog treats the other week for him as a special treat.  I mainly made them because I was going to be in Akron all day and thought that he might enjoy a nice treat. I had never made homemade dog treats before – it wasn’t to hard at all.  I will post the recipe  link that I used for the biscuits.  I don’t think I really changed to much.   The main ingredients are peanut butter, flour, carrots and bacon.  If your dog is a vegetarian dog then you can omit the bacon.  I happened to have it in my fridge from another recipe I made a week ago so I used what I had.  I normally do not have bacon at the house, but I always have carrots so I’m sure next time I make them I will just double up on carrots, and omit the bacon.

The finished product.. yum!

This is everything you need: All purpose flour, whole wheat flour, egg, peanut butter, honey, bacon, carrots, water

I use organic peanut butter or natural peanut butter instead of regular PB.  The honey I used is from a local  honey place – I am sure there is a technical term… but its a honey place that is in Baltimore, Ohio.  Yeah for local products!

undefined

Add the flour and whole wheat flour

undefined

Pour in the water and add the egg.  They say to mix up all the wet ingredients first and then add it all to the dry… I didn’t do that.

undefined

Add the Peanut Butter and honey

Note:  do not use the whisk at this point unless you would like it to end up looking like mine did.  I didn’t think the whisk would end up looking like this… I think I only stirred or attempt to stir about 2 times and it was full of peanut butter and flour.  I think it was one of my finer blonde moments and my lack of knowledge of cooking.

undefined

Chop the carrots up.  I did a basic chop and then a finer one to make them smaller.

I also have NO IDEA what the plastic bag is from in the corner of the photos… seriously… I can’t remember what was in it, why it was there or what I did after I cleaned up. It’s the mysterious creepy bag that crept into the pictures

undefinedundefined

Use the spatula because that works WAY better at mixing things.

Add the carrots and bacon.  If I didn’t have bacon I would just double up on carrots.

undefined

Use your hands if you want to mix everything together.  The spatula just wasn’t mixing the peanut butter into the flour as much as it needed.  The dough is a very dry dough. I think I added another Tbsp of water to the mix and then added a drop or two towards the end.

undefined

Put it on your floured  surface- note lightly floured…I floured way to much. This was about a third of the dough mix.

Start rolling out super cute dog biscuits!

I mainly used the Medium done bone size and then cut a couple of the small sized. You can get the cookie cutters at most kitchen or bake stores, or the pet store.

undefined

Put them on a cookie sheet and bake for about 30-35 minutes

undefined

Admire the fact that you just made some seriously cute dog biscuits and your dog will love you forever

These were the ones waiting to go in the oven – you can see the smaller ones in the background.

Bones right out of the oven – they look pretty much exactly the same as when they went in.

undefined

Admire your handy work again

undefined

Make sure your dog is patiently waiting for your delicious treats  …  and then watch him go crazy

Make a note that you will now have to shampoo your rug because he was licking every possible morsel from the rug

I think Bentley enjoyed the treats.  He would get very excited during the next couple of days when he heard me going after the zip lock baggie. They last about a week if your dog doesn’t eat them all beforehand.

Here is the link to recipe that I used.  I changed it a little – I added a little bit more water as needed.  I also used just plain old Natural Peanut butter instead of the Sunbutter – I couldn’t find that.  The original recipe that was first used had all gluten free flours used – so you can try that recipe as well. I opted out since I don’t normally have gluten free products and didn’t want to buy special products just for these biscuits.  Here is the link to the original recipe that is different from the one I used.

Enjoy!

  1. Hi, Krista ~
LOVE your adaptation of this recipe. Since I blog for SunButter, I’m always looking for people using the product. Since I’m a fellow dog lover, I can’t wait to try this version for our pooches. If you’re so inclined, just thought I’d let you know there’s a spot on the SunButter website where you can find where to find it near you. It’s here: http://bit.ly/b37krw
Looking forward to following your beautiful posts!

Thank you for checking out my website! I did look to see where I could find SunButter when I set out to find all the ingredients. I looked at Giant Eagle and couldn’t find it there. It listed out Target and Meijer as well – I didn’t stop at those places. I will be sure to look at one of those places next time I am there to see if they have it!
